Gecko Green with Envy

We restored a 2003 in Gecko Green in 2017 and got a couple of stone chips that needed to be addressed. The touch up paint sent was a spot on match and the application tools were of great quality. They get an unconditional vote of approval.

Perfect match

TuD has always provided A+ paint match. I've used TuD on a couple repair projects and it's just easier this way compared to paint gun compressor and mixing for small jobs. I will continue using TuD for any of the small jobs that don't require a body shop.

Perfect match every time!!

I gave you 10 stars because I do recommend TUD to everyone I talk to about auto paint. You guys are absolutely spot on with your color matching of any car color. And customer service is excellent as well.

So easy

This touch up paint worked great! 61 year old retired school teacher here with zero knowledge about auto body paint and repair and this was so easy. Had a fairly deep scratch on my Hyandai Kona bumper so I wet sanded until the area was smooth, taped off the spot to be repaired, and followed the directions on the can. The scratch is gone and my bumper looks perfect! Taking it to a shop and having a pro repair it would have cost me much more. I am one happy customer!!

Perfect Match

This is the second order from TouchUpDirect and in both cases, the product was fantastic, color matched perfectly and was really easy to use. Highly recommend this company if you are thinking of fixing any dent, scratch or minor body work with a rattle can and 2K clear.

The aerosol cans are a game changer

The product worked well and I’m pleased with the results. The aerosol cans allowed me to fix the paint flake spots on my car effortlessly and the end results look good. It was also nice to get everything I needed, ie primer, paint and clear coat in one purchase saving me time and money. I will definitely come back to purchase more should the need arise.

Excellent Product & Service

I needed touch up paint for a 10 year old BMW motorcycle. I did have the paint code, & they quickly sent me a small kit of primer, a perfect-match base coat, & clear coat.

Great match and excellent system

I loved the instructions and the ease of use has been great. I recently had a vehicle painted in this color; the match was ready and accurate. The small brush applicator works well. Very impressed with the product! Already planning to get a spray can in case a big scratch/ dent happens to avoid rusting.

Perfect color and depth

This was Chevrolet Imperial Blue, which is really tough to match, but it worked great. The combination kit with primer, color, and clear coat combined make a perfect finish on the replacement front bumper of ends. It’s not a cheap product, but definitely the best quality.

1972 Mustang - Perfect color match

I had concerns about trying to match the paint on my Mustang as a previous owner had repainted it. After doing some research, I decided to order the paint from TouchUpDirect. It is perfect! It took a little practice to do the whole process (prep, paint, clear coat.), but the instructions helped. I bought the spray paint for both stone chips and the inner door sills. In retrospect, I should have also bought the pen for the stone chips. Highly recommend!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I need primer for automotive touch-up paint?

You need primer if your damage exposes bare metal or plastic. Small chips that only damage colorcoat and clearcoat don't require primer. Deep scratches, rust removal, or any repair that goes down to raw substrate requires primer for proper adhesion and corrosion protection.

  • What's the difference between waterborne and solvent-based primer?

Waterborne primer uses water as the carrier instead of harsh solvents, making it better for the environment with ultra-low VOC emissions, minimal odor, and superior coverage. Our touch up applicators and professional primers are waterborne. Our aerosol primer uses low-VOC solvent formula optimized for spray application.

  • Can I skip primer and just use extra coats of paint?

No. Paint won't adhere properly to bare metal or plastic without primer. The repair will peel, chip, or rust underneath. Primer is chemically formulated to bond to substrate—paint is not.

  • How many coats of primer should I apply?

Apply 2-3 thin coats for most repairs. Deep damage or rust repair may need 3-4 coats. Never apply primer so thick that it runs or drips—multiple thin coats are always better.

  • Do TouchUpDirect kits include primer?

Preferred and Platinum kits include primer, colorcoat, and clearcoat. Essential kits include only colorcoat and clearcoat—add primer separately if needed. Use our kit selector or contact support if unsure which kit is right for your repair.

  • Can I apply colorcoat immediately after primer?

For touch up brush and pen primer, wait 15-30 minutes minimum. For aerosol primer, wait 30-60 minutes minimum. Primer must be fully dry to the touch before applying colorcoat. Painting too soon can trap solvents and cause bubbling or poor adhesion.

  • Will primer prevent rust?

Yes. Primer seals bare metal from moisture and oxygen, preventing rust formation. However, you must remove all existing rust before applying primer—primer can't stop rust that's already started. Wire brush or sand until all corrosion is gone, then prime immediately.

  • Can I use your primer on plastic bumpers?

Yes. TouchUpDirect primer is formulated for all automotive substrates including metal, aluminum, fiberglass, and plastic. It provides excellent adhesion to both hard and flexible plastics used in bumpers, mirrors, and trim.

  • Why does my primer look rough or textured?

This is normal, especially with aerosol application. Slight texture (orange peel) is common and will be covered by colorcoat and clearcoat. For glass-smooth finish, wet sand dried primer with 800-grit sandpaper before applying colorcoat.

  • How long does primer last on a car?

When properly applied and covered with colorcoat and clearcoat, primer-based repairs last 3-5+ years. The complete paint system (primer + colorcoat + clearcoat) provides maximum durability and weather resistance.
